Accra History

Accra is the capital of Ghana and has been inhabited since the 14th century. It was originally a small fishing village known as Nyanoase, and was part of the Ga people's state of Akwamu. In the 17th century, the Akwamu Empire was overthrown by the Denkyira, who made Accra their capital. The Denkyira were in turn overthrown by the Ashanti Empire in the 18th century, and Accra became the capital of the Ashanti Empire. In the 19th century, Accra was occupied by the British, who made it the capital of the British Gold Coast colony. After Ghana gained independence in 1957, Accra became the capital of the newly independent nation.
