Agnes Water History

Agnes Water is a coastal town located in the Gladstone Region of Queensland, Australia. It is situated on the Discovery Coast, approximately 1770 kilometres north of Brisbane and is the most northerly surf beach in Queensland. The area was first explored by Captain James Cook in 1770, who named the nearby Round Hill Point after his friend, the botanist Joseph Banks. The area was later explored by Matthew Flinders in 1802. The town was named after Agnes Prentice, the daughter of the first European settler in the area, William Prentice. The Prentice family arrived in the area in 1873 and established a cattle station. Agnes Water was officially gazetted as a town in 1971. The town has since become a popular tourist destination, with its beautiful beaches, national parks and nearby attractions. It is also home to the Agnes Water Surf Life Saving Club, which was established in 1975.
