Albany is the capital of New York State and the seat of Albany County. It is located on the west bank of the Hudson River, about 10 miles south of its confluence with the Mohawk River. Albany is the cultural and economic center of the Capital District of New York State, which comprises the Albany-Schenectady-Troy metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Albany was 97,856. The city is home to many colleges and universities, including the State University of New York at Albany, the oldest and largest public university in the state. Albany is also home to the New York State Museum, the Empire State Plaza, and the Egg performing arts center. The city is known for its rich history, diverse culture, and numerous attractions.
