Empire, Power & People–London Walking Tour

London is often called a "melting pot," but many people don't know how London became the diverse city we know it to be. This walking tour will show you a different side of the city by disclosing details of colonial history and commonwealth migration that is hardly talked about. Our walking tour is split into two parts, winding through South and East London with a section in the City of London. -You will have the opportunity to listen to some of the histories of Brixton from the 19th century until the present day while seeing some landmarks such as Windrush Square and Electric Avenue. -There will be a stop in the famous market where you can grab a bite to eat -In The City, you will hear about Britain's colonial history including, the rise of the East India Trading Company -You will then walk from the city through Whitechapel and hear why the area has become a place of Bangladeshi pride. -The tour will end by the overground bridge where you will get to spot some creative street art.

Points Of Interest

  • 15 minutes: You will get to walk around the market and grab a bite to eat.
  • 10 minutes: We will stop here to talk about the importance of the Windrush generation.
  • 10 minutes: Get a lovely view of the city while pulling into Blackfriars station after a short journey.
  • 5 minutes: We will walk up to St. Paul's Cathedral so you can snap some photos.
  • 15 minutes: Stop outside this rustic Church and get some background on how this part of the City was built before continuing onto some lesser-known streets in The City.
  • 5 minutes: We will walk through the market to view some of the splendour of the architecture and we will stop outside of the Lloyds building to talk about colonial history.
  • 20 minutes: Listen to a riveting talk about the East India Trading Company and how Britain came to control the largest empire in history from this neighbourhood while observing the dramatic Lloyds building as a backdrop.
  • 15 minutes: Take a seat and take in the busy surroundings while hearing about the origins of the park and some history of the Bangladeshi community in East London.
  • 10 minutes: Stop outside near the Mosque and hear about how its history from Church to Synagogue to Mosque.
  • 15 minutes: The tour will end in Brick Lane we will talk about the cultural importance of this area and leave you to shop or eat after the tour is over.
